Rystad Energy reports that the U.S. oil industry can save more than $7 billion in wages by replacing human workers with robots on oil rigs.

It is predicted that at least 2 out of every 10 oil workers globally in drilling, operational support and maintenance can be replaced by automation in the oil field over the next decade.   This would translate into more than 100,000 energy jobs being replaced by robots and automation in the U.S. alone.

Sumit Yadav, an analyst at Rystad, reports:

Even when the Covid-19 downturn is finally past us, operators will have to continue exploring new avenues for cost reductions.

There are, however, hurdles to overcome, including regulatory approvals as well as resistance from labor organizations.
